Zvi was born and raised in Israel but now lives and works in New York. Arriving in 1978 on a dance scholarship from the American-Israeli Cultural Foundation, he spent his early career dancing with the Joyce Trisler Dance Company, Feld Ballets/ NY, and the Bat-Sheva Dance Company. In 1989 he founded his own company, Zvi Gotheiner & Dancers. Passing through the theater during rehearsals, I noticed he would sit on a chair, just at the edge of the downstage line, as close as he could be to the dancers. This really seemed to me a reflection of how involved and committed he was to his work. The dancers were all very willing to work with me on this photo, almost like they were doing it for him.
